Narcotics police found 1,818kg of pseudoephedrine from a house in Greater Noida and arrested two Nigerian and one South African national, making what they said on Saturday was the biggest drugs bust by value in the country.
The approximate value of the pseudoephedrine, which is prescribed medically as a decongestant but is a chemical precursor used in the illicit manufacture of methamphetamine (also known as crystal meth), is believed to be at least ₹1,000 crore, officials said, adding that the house from where it was recovered on Thursday was being used as a lab to make the chemical.
The operation was busted when a woman was caught with 24.7kg of pseudoephedrine when she was about to board a flight to Johannesburg from the Delhi airport on Thursday. “She said she had been handed the consignment by two people from Nigeria who asked her to carry it to Johannesburg and was promised good money in exchange,” said Madhav Singh of the Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB).
