In pursuance of a National Green Tribunal (NGT) order, the Delhi government has asked the heads of all government, government-aided and unaided recognized schools to adhere to a set of guidelines to save water. In a circular, the government has asked the schools to create awareness by conducting school-level activities that focus on water conservation and issues related to waste water. “Organize drawing and painting competitions focused on water conservation. Analyse water use over a school year, over a calendar year, and from season to season,” reads one of the suggestions given by the government. It has also asked schools to organize special talk sessions for the students during the morning assembly on water conservation practices as well as on rain water harvesting system. The list of guidelines for students to follow includes instructions to ensure water taps are closed and use of water bottles instead of going to water taps frequently during school hours besides not to waste drinking water for washing hands. Schools have been asked to establish water-efficient irrigation practices on the premises, use drip irrigation system instead of sprinklers in the school compound and stop water supply to the areas in the schools that do not have plants. The circular has also asked the members of the school management committees to be involved in making the habit of water conservation popular among staff, students and parents.
