Several celebrated Carnatic musicians, including T.V. Gopalakrishnan, Karaikkudi Mani, A. Kanyakumari, Lalgudi G.J.R. Krishnan and Vijayalakshmi, Sikkil Mala Chandrashekhar, Ghatam Karthick, M. Chandrasekharan, Kamalakara Rao and Akkarai Sisters, have joined hands with hundreds of Hindustani and international artistes to be part of the Planet Symphony Orchestra (PSO), an art-science social initiative to tackle a global environmental emergency.
They have contributed to a global music production that will be released on World Environment Day, June 5. Chitravina N. Ravikiran has composed the 12part symphony, based on the 72 Melakarthas, in which around 1,800 artistes from over 50 countries have taken part. “This will be our second programme under the PSO. As musicians, we will offer ourselves to fundraisers for environmental causes. We are in the process of tying up with NGOs,” Mr. Ravikiran said. Ghatam S. Karthick, whose son Sarvesh Karthik has also performed in the piece, said it was nice to contribute towards environmental protection. “Music and rhythm are there in nature. When all is well with the world, musicians can get better inspired,” he said.
Henric Andersen, inventor of the 52-string guitar from Denmark, said he would never mix art and politics. “But this is an exception because the music is based on original ideas, plus the important global message,” he said.
Star-studded
The line-up of stars in the recording include four-time Grammy Winner Glen Velez (who is also on the PSO Advisory Board along with Vyjayantimala Bali), pianist Eli Yamin, Phil Scarff, Ronu Majumdar, Bickram Ghosh and Sacramento Youth Symphony conducted by Michael Neumann, to name a few.
